Devices, accounts and knowing when to stop

Browser games are low effort to start, which is the appeal. They're also easy to keep open for longer than planned. These notes apply to every game on our list.

Devices

Any current desktop or mobile browser will open the four games. Keep the browser updated; old versions are the most common reason a game map won't load. On phones, turn the screen sideways for strategy games. Shakes & Fidget is the only one on the list that feels natural in portrait.

Keeping a game account safe

  • Make the game account on the game's own site, and check the domain in the address bar first.
  • Use account details you don't use anywhere else, and keep them somewhere safer than a sticky note.
  • Nobody from a game needs your banking details by chat or email. Treat such a request as a scam.
  • Switch on two-factor protection when a game offers it.

Spending

All four games sell optional extras. Decide on a monthly limit before you start, not in the middle of a long timer. Phones and app stores let you require approval for purchases, which is worth setting up on a child's device.

Time

Timer-based games are built around coming back. A few habits help:

  • Play after the things you need to do, not instead of them.
  • Switch off push notifications from the game.
  • If you notice you're checking a game during work or late at night, take a week off and see how it feels.

Age

Each game sets its own minimum age in its terms. Check that on the game's site before a child creates an account.
